The importance of high jump shoes / spikes

Q: Can I high jump with normal tennis shoes?
A: If you are a beginner chances are you are going to start jumping with whatever you have, but I would not recommend jumping with normal tennis shoes because they do not have the support or the grip that high jump spikes have.

Q: Can I high jump with sprinting track and field shoes / spikes?
A: Most track athletes are going to do a running event before they start high jumping. Most parents will think that if their son or daughter is going out for track they will need “track spikes”. Unfortunately the high jump spikes are specialty spikes and are different than normal track spikes. Normal sprinting track spikes may do the job in the beginning, but the more serious you get about high jump and learn about the event, the more you are going to realize that you need high jump spikes not only for technical reasons but most importantly, for avoiding injury.

Q: How are high jump shoes / spikes different than normal sprinting track spikes?
A: Sprinting track shoes have only spikes in the front and high jump shoes have spikes in the front and in he back (heel). High jump spikes will offer the jumper the traction that he or she needs.

Q: Do I really need high jump spikes / shoes?
A: I would say yes, and I would recommend you using high jump shoes for 2 reasons. The first reason is for injury prevention, and the second reason is because it will give you the traction you need to run a good curve and have a solid plant at take off.

Q: How much do high jump shoes / spikes cost?
A: The new models can range from $80 - $130 but you can find high jump shoes on clearance or used for much less than that.

Q: Where do I buy high jump shoes?
A: Very few local store will carry high jump spikes in their store. The high jump spikes market is for the most part an online market. Here are some online store that will carry high jump spikes / shoes:

Q: Do high jump shoes make me improve and jump higher?
A: High jump shoes will give you the traction you need to be able to run a good curve and have a solid plant. I would say yes, they will help a great deal if you as a jumper are at the point where you are leaning in the curve at a high speed and attack the take off leaning away, but remember that shoes don't jump, jumpers jump :)

Q: I already bought sprinting track shoes this season and cannot afford a 2nd pair of shoes (high jump spikes). Do I have another option besides high jump shoes?
A: Yes, it is called a J-heel and it is a product that can be attached to your track an field shoe and will give you the spikes that you need in the heel of the take off foot. If you can I would recommend to buy high jump shoes, but if you can’t for the moment the J-heel may be the way to go until you can get an actual high jump shoes.
